Beginning the Recovery Process After a Hurricane

hurricane damage, water damage, flood damage
When your home has been the victim of a hurricane, you are likely to have extensive water, wind, and other forms of property damage that can leave your home in a state of disarray.  Ensure the safest environment possible when coming back home by following these steps.

Assess Your Living Situation

Depending on the severity of damage, you have several options:
  • Local hotel chains often offer discounted rates for displaced homeowners.
  • Stay with family and friends to be cost-effective.
  • Try to find a solution closer to home to begin the process of rebuilding quicker.
If you are able to return to your home safely, look out for external damage such as downed power lines, debris, and fallen trees.

Consider You and Your Family's Health

Organizations like the Red Cross will be able to help provide counseling, emergency food supply, and various other emergency resources to those affected. If you or a family member is struggling, it is important to reach out to the resources available.

File Your Insurance Claim

Insurance companies will be extremely busy after a disaster, so, contact yours immediately to file a claim;  they’ll likely need
  • photos
  • an inspection report
  • other pieces of information to help assess your home's damage.
Have a thorough conversation with your insurance provider so you can avoid the common mistakes made when filing claims.

Prioritize

It’s best to assess the damage, then, prioritize what needs to be fixed. The more severe damages like water damage will need to be addressed first to decrease the chance of residual effects, which includes:
  • Mold
  • Floor, wall, and insulation decay
  • Ruined furniture
Taking on a home rebuild after a hurricane is an overwhelming experience. Make sure you are reaching out to trusted professionals to help guide you through the construction process.

When Hurricanes Strike: Stay Safe Through the Storm

For anyone living or traveling along the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico’s coastlines mid-May through November, learning how to stay safe is critical. Once you have a hurricane warning in your area,  that means there’s 36 hours or less until the storm hits, so make your final preparations. Abba takes your safety seriously, so follow these safety precautions.

First Things First — Secure Your Home and Your Safety
  • Stow loose items in your yard and unplug all electronic devices including appliances. Use towels or blankets to cover any areas that could leak inside. Finally, consider turning off your electricity at the main breaker.
  • Locate your emergency preparedness kit and turn on your battery operated radio to remain up to date on all emergency information and alerts.
  • If your zone is instructed to, evacuate immediately.

Stay Inside to Stay Alive

If you do stay home, make sure you stay inside to avoid being hit by flying debris or struck by lightning. While inside, follow these tips:
  • Fill containers with water and stow for later. Then, turn off all remaining utilities, including water and propane tanks.
  • Ensure all interior doors are closed and huddle in the safest area you can find, staying away from windows, doors and skylights. An interior room is ideal, but a closet is a good alternative.
  • Run generators outdoors and away from windows.

It's Not the End, It's the Eye

Keep in mind that there will be a calm in the storm. This is called the "eye", but it's not the end, it's the middle. Once the "eye" passes, you will experience the eye wall where high winds and thunderstorms could strike again.
